Orchid Care

Orchid care is demanding and complicated but very rewarding. Temperature and humidity must be maintained at the levels to which the species is accustomed. All this information can be found on the Internet as well as from the place you purchased the plant.

To really delve into orchid care, potential growers need:

• Orchids
• A greenhouse
• Thermometer and thermostat
• A misting system
Orchid care is very diverse though, depending on the species. Some general tips include:
• Don’t water the actual bloom or leaves
• Use orchid food specifically for orchids and explicitly follow the directions on the packaging.
• Insufficient light is the number one reason indoor cultivated orchids don’t bloom, but species matters when it comes to just how much light is correct – leaves are the best indicator.
• Potting medium will depend on whether the species in question is an epiphyte or a terrestrial.

Remember that with Orchidaceae there are exceptions to every rule and you can only really rely on experience – your own or that of others.
