Orchid Plant
Picking a healthy orchid plant is the important first
step of growing at home or giving one as a gift. Roots should be green,
long and situated in loose medium. Dead or dying roots can always be
pruned away, but beginning with a majority of healthy roots will help
the cultivation be more successful.
A healthy orchid plant can be blooming or not – depending on which
genus and species you buy. For example, Phalaenopsis are known for diverting
more energy than is healthy to blooming – which is why they are
so popular. But the danger is that if you buy one that is already blooming
there is no way to determine how many blooming cycles it has already
been through.
Picking an orchid plant out of the wild is not recommended and not even
legal in general. It can sometimes be challenging to find a healthy
plant at big box home improvement stores – the alternative is
to find a local grower who will sell you a healthy plant right off the
bat.
